Event Description

Certified ESG Masterclass for African Banks

OVERVIEW

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) risk management has moved rapidly from a voluntary best practice to a supervisory requirement for banking institutions across Africa. A wave of regulatory activity driven by global frameworks including the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) Principles for the Effective Management and Supervision of Climate-related Financial Risks, the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), the International Financial Reporting Standards Foundation’s IFRS S1 and S2 Sustainability Disclosure Standards and the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) is now being translated into binding expectations by central banks and financial sector regulators across the continent.

African banking institutions face a distinctive ESG risk landscape. The continent’s economies are disproportionately exposed to climate physical risks including droughts, floods, desertification, and extreme weather events that directly affect key sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, mining, energy, and manufacturing. At the same time, social risks relating to financial inclusion, labour practices, community impacts, and human rights are increasingly scrutinised by regulators, international correspondent banks, development finance institutions, and capital markets. Governance risks — including conduct, corruption, transparency, and board accountability remain among the most significant drivers of financial loss and reputational damage in African banking.

Failure to build robust ESG risk management capabilities exposes banks to supervisory sanctions, deteriorating correspondent banking relationships, exclusion from international capital markets, reputational damage, and strategic misalignment with the sustainability priorities of their economies. Conversely, banks that develop genuine ESG competence are better positioned to manage their risk portfolios, attract international funding, and support the transition to sustainable economic growth.

The Dupleix Institute 5-Day ESG Risk Management Workshop for African Banks is a practitioner-focused, intensive training programme designed for Risk, Compliance, Credit, Treasury, Internal Audit, and Senior Management professionals in banking institutions across Africa. The programme equips participants with the conceptual knowledge, analytical tools, and practical frameworks to build or strengthen their bank’s ESG risk management capability from governance and policy design through to scenario analysis, portfolio assessment and regulatory disclosure.

All content is grounded in current international regulatory developments and leading practice frameworks, and is consistently contextualised to the African banking environment: the sectors, risk profiles, supervisory landscapes, data constraints, and economic structures that characterise banking across the continent. Case studies, exercises, and self-assessment tools are drawn from real African banking scenarios to ensure direct relevance and immediate applicability.
